Why the fitting rooms being there matters
Denim sizing is not a number you can trust between cuts. The same waist measurement fits differently across a straight, a slim and a relaxed leg, and it changes again with rise. Having the rooms beside the wall means you can pull three fits, try all three, and put two back without walking the length of the store. That is the whole reason the department is laid out the way it is.
How to shop it
Start with the leg, not the waist. Decide whether you want straight, slim, relaxed or tapered, then find your waist within that cut and expect to try one size either side of it. Rigid denim will give a little with wear; anything with stretch will not change much at all, so buy that one to fit on the day.
Staff on the floor fit denim every day. Ask, rather than guessing between two sizes in a fitting room.
